Sign-in and access

What a connected AI app can read and change in Diurnal, how sign-in works, how long access lasts and how to disconnect.

To connect an AI app, you sign in to Diurnal in your browser and approve it once. The app never sees your password.

What the app can do

The approval page, Allow [your app] to use Diurnal?, lists exactly two things:

  • Read and change your tasks: add, edit, complete, move and delete them, plus read your tags and projects.
  • Read your calendar: see your Google Calendar events, never change them. This only returns events if you have connected Google Calendar in the Mac app.

That is the whole of it. A connected app cannot read your password, change your account, change calendar events, or see other people's data. Every change it makes is to your own tasks. Creating a task, and changes to its title, notes, date, tags or status, show in the task's History as made by an AI assistant.

How sign-in works

  1. Your app opens Diurnal's sign-in page in your browser. There's no key or code to copy.
  2. Choose Continue with Google or Continue with email, using the account from your Mac.
  3. Click Allow, or Cancel to stop.

Your app gets its own sign-in, separate from your Mac's, so disconnecting it never signs your Mac out.

How long access lasts

  • Your app stays signed in on its own while you keep using it.
  • After 30 days without use, it asks you to sign in again.
  • Diurnal keeps only a scrambled copy of your app's sign-in, which can't be used to sign in.

Disconnect an app

  1. In the Diurnal Mac app, open Settings › Account.
  2. Under Connected Apps, find the app and click Disconnect…, then Disconnect.

The app loses access at its next request. To use it again, connect it again from the app. You can also remove Diurnal from the AI app itself, in the same place you added it.
