Using Diurnal

Open and close Diurnal

Open Diurnal from anywhere with a shortcut or the menu bar, move between Write, Plan and Focus, and close it again.

Diurnal lives in your menu bar. It opens over whatever you're doing and gets out of the way when you're done.

Open it

  • Press ⇧⌘A from any app. Press it again to hide Diurnal.
  • Or click Diurnal's icon in the menu bar and choose Open Diurnal.

The shortcut works once you're signed in. To change it, see General settings.

Diurnal opens over your whole screen, with your desktop blurred behind it.

Close it

Any of these hides Diurnal:

  • Press Esc. If a card or menu is open, Esc closes that first; press it again to hide Diurnal.
  • Press ⇧⌘A again.
  • Click outside Diurnal, or switch to another app.

Hiding is not quitting: Diurnal stays in the menu bar so reminders can ring. To quit, choose Quit Diurnal from its menu bar menu.

Write, Plan and Focus

Diurnal has three lenses. Press ⌘1, ⌘2 or ⌘3 to switch.

  • Write: the pad you write on, with Coming up and Done. See Write on the pad.
  • Plan: Overview, Weekly, All time and Projects. See Plan your days.
  • Focus: Pomodoro and Clock. See Focus.

To move between a lens's sections, press ⌥⌘1 to ⌥⌘4, or ⇧⌘[ and ⇧⌘]. You can also type a slash and the section's name on a new line of the pad, such as /weekly or /done.

The menu bar menu

Click the menu bar icon for Open Diurnal, your Focus timer controls while a session runs, Sounds, your version number, Settings…, Check for Updates… and Quit Diurnal.
